A bold initiative commenced one year ago today has grown into a committed community of ICIJ Insiders who help us to safeguard our fearless and independent journalism.
The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists has always welcomed donations from our readers. The Insiders program aims to strategically grow that vital grassroots support.
Insiders membership starts at $3 per month, or $35 per year, and comes with unique benefits, such as quarterly round-ups of ICIJ’s latest stories and opportunities to ask our reporters questions about their work.
Many of you responded. Now, we have more than 1,000 active members who together have already raised more than $300,000 to fund journalism like the Implant Files and Solitary Voices.
We were blown away by that support and continue to be impressed at how this community – dedicated to supporting the costly and time-intensive work of investigative reporting – has grown.
Hearing directly from readers around the world about why they support us reminds me why our work is so vital. We thought we’d share a few of their reasons with you, and if any of their comments resonate, we hope you’ll consider joining ICIJ Insiders, too.
‘Journalism is essential for speaking truth to power’
Our latest investigation, Solitary Voices, upholds our core tenet – exposing the truth and holding the powerful accountable. Our reporting revealed that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement uses solitary confinement as a “go-to tool” to manage and punish even the most vulnerable detainees. As a consequence, some lawmakers are demanding change.
‘I’m passionate about people having access to information.’
The International Medical Devices Database, released alongside the Implant Files, is still growing – just a few weeks ago our data and research team updated it with more than 16,600 records from eight countries, bringing the total to more than 109,000 records and 26 total countries represented to date. Thanks to it, patients around the world have more information at their fingertips about medical devices. The website has already had more than 700,000 unique visitors.
‘The world needs independent investigative journalists.’
ICIJ serves a trusted network of 249 member investigative journalists in more than 90 countries. Our latest Meet the Investigators piece focuses on Karlijn Kuijpers in the Netherlands, whose work revolves around the impact of corporations on everyday individuals – including companies’ tax avoidance.
‘I believe in ICIJ ability to change the world for better.’
This is what our investigations do – by holding the powerful accountable through investigative journalism, we can achieve real, lasting impact.
What’s your reason for supporting ICIJ? Become an Insider with a gift of $3/month, or $35 a year (or more) to join a global community passionate about changing the world through independent, investigative journalism.
We’re so grateful to have such a dedicated community standing with us and believing in our mission, and we hope you’ll consider joining us today.
