Catherine Gicheru, Kenya, is an award-winning journalist. She previously worked at the Nation, where she distinguished herself by writing dispassionate, critical stories about the government of President Daniel Arap Moi.
In 1992, her tough independent reporting was honoured with a Courage in Journalism Award from the International Women's Media Foundation.
She was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, a fellow at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford and the founding editor of The Star, the third leading newspaper in Kenya.
Currently, Gicheru is the ICFJ Knight International Journalism Fellow and the founder and director of the Africa Women Journalism Project, strengthening the voices of women journalists and driving the coverage of under-reported issues affecting women and other marginalized groups.
She co-founded PesaCheck, East Africa’s first fact-checking initiative, and was previously the country lead of Code for Kenya, a data journalism and civic technology initiative.
