Horacio Verbitsky, Argentina, is a political columnist/editorial writer at Pagina/12.
He has authored a dozen books, including The Flight: Confessions of an Argentine Dirty Warrior, an insider’s account of human rights abuses during the country’s last military dictatorship. Translated into English, French, Portuguese, and Italian, the book contains the chilling confessions of a former Argentine Navy officer and prompted the military to acknowledge for the first time its crimes during the “dirty war.” Another book, I Steal for the Crown, depicted political corruption and forced the resignation of a top official in President Carlos Menem’s government.
Verbitsky was awarded the 1995-96 Latin American Studies Association Media Award as well as the 2001 International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists. He is a journalism professor and a contributor to The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and El Pais, among other publications.
